ASL Lessons with Sr. Najma
Sr. Najma/Crystal Morales is now offering personalized American Sign Language (ASL) lessons. Sr. Najma is proficient in ASL as well as Arabic sign language. She can guide you through learning how to communicate using basic phrases in both ASL and Arabic.
Classes are held virtually and the cost is $30 per 30 minute session.

All classes are taught virtually through your preferred medium - Facetime, Google Meet, or Zoom. Sr. Najma is available daily between 1-6pm CST.
Sessions can be for individual learners or small groups of no more than 5 people. The cost per 30 minute class is $30.
Meet Sr. Najma
“As salam alaikum السلام عليكم!
My name is Crystal Morales or Islamically: (Najma Sadiq نجمة صديق) and I am a hard of hearing, blind, multiply disabled sister from Austin who reverted to Al-Islam in 2012 after much study with the late Sh. Umer (RA). I use American Sign Language modified for the blind, on a daily basis. As a disabled Muslima, I am saddened that the community does not offer any services for the deaf and hard of hearing, such as an interpreter for Masjid functions or even Jumah Salah.
I am left out of a lot due to my hearing loss and hope inshallah that one day, the Masjids could hire an interpreter even if for Friday prayers only.
While thinking about this dilemma, I thought of an idea of offering to teach basic to intermediate sign language to anyone out in our community who wishes to learn it. I also know basic Arabic sign language that is geared towards religious words and phrases we tend to use a lot throughout the day.
Having the ability to even just fingerspell (sign the alphabet) can allow a hearing person to communicate to a deaf or hard of hearing sign language user, anything they wish without having knowledge of whole signs yet.
If you feel like you’d be interested in taking one-on-one, zoom classes, in person or group lessons, I’d be honored to offer my services to anyone who wishes to learn.
I also teach Braille for the blind.
I hold a B.A. in Vocational Rehabilitation Counseling and Teaching (of the disabled) from East Central University Ada, OK.
I’ve spent several years volunteering my time at my high school, the Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired.
